Blog Tour: The Sweet Dead Life by Joy Preble & A Giveaway

Welcome to my stop on the Blog Tour for the Sweet Dead Life!  I jumped at the chance to be a part of this tour because I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of the book and I loved it!  I'll post a separate review of the book, but today I have a guest post by the author, and a copy of the book to giveaway!

The Sweet Dead Life

“I found out two things today. One, I think I’m dying. And two, my brother is a perv.”

So begins the diary of 14-year-old Jenna Samuels, who is having a very bad eighth-grade year. Her single mother spends all day in bed. Dad vanished when she was eight. Her 16-year-old brother, Casey, tries to hold together what’s left of the family by working two after-school jobs— difficult, as he’s stoned all the time. To make matters worse, Jenna is sick. When she collapses one day, Casey tries to race her to the hospital in their beat-up Prius and crashes instead.

Jenna wakes up in the ER to find Casey beside her. Beatified. Literally. The flab and zits? Gone. Before long, Jenna figures out that Casey didn’t survive the accident at all. He’s an “A-word.” (She can’t bring herself to utter the truth.) Soon they discover that Jenna isn’t just dying: she’s being poisoned. And Casey has been sent back to help solve the mystery that not only holds the key to her survival, but also to their mother’s mysterious depression and father’s disappearance.

Joy Preble talks about Jenna, the main character.  She even shares some of her favourite Jenna moments!
Basically, I love everything about Jenna! She has been – and continues to be—one of my favorite characters to write. Actually, my editor has voiced the opinion that she is one of his favorite characters to edit. And my publicist loves writing publicity copy that emulates her voice! In short, it’s one big Soho Press/Soho Teen/Random House love fest for Jenna Samuels. Even Kirkus Reviews, notoriously fussy about giving praise, had this to say: “ Jenna’s sarcastic and sassy tone will easily resonate with readers, and her keen observations are derisive and laugh-out-loud funny.” Which pretty much covers it, I’d say.
But for me in particular, I love Jenna’s take on the world. She has something to say about pretty much everything in her little piece of Houston, Texas: from her love of breakfast tacos to the specific line cook at BJ’s BBQ whose French fries she favors to her disdain for certain fashion choices as Crocs footwear and her love of her cowgirl boots, Jenna is outspoken and never shy about letting everyone know what she’s thinking.
A few favorite Jenna moments:
Jenna in the hospital, when Nurse Ed Lyons is questioning her about her eating habits, trying to figure out what is ailing her, Jenna comments on his ugly clogs:  “I decided the clogs were making Ed cranky. Just because the Crocs kiosk in the mall was still in business didn’t mean that one had to shop there.”
Jenna on the educational policies of Ima Hogg Junior High: “Worksheets are big at Ima Hogg. So are Projects. Especially Group Projects.  Ima Hogg believed in collaborative learning—which never failed to piss me off every time I got stuck doing work for the Collaborative Slackers.”
Jenna on seeing wing nubs on Casey’s back: “Maybe the thing on his back was some kind of sex disease…Maybe back feathers were common.”
Yeah… you love her, don’t you!
